August brings a mix of emotions for families โ excitement, anxiety, nostalgia, and the inevitable scramble to find school shoes that still fit. Whether your child is starting school for the first time or returning after summer, preparation makes the transition smoother for everyone.
"The best back-to-school preparation isn't academic โ it's emotional. Talk about feelings, visit the school beforehand, and make sure your child knows it's okay to feel nervous. Normalising anxiety reduces it." More at NAEYC โ School Readiness.
Two Weeks Before School Starts
- Gradually shift bedtime 15 minutes earlier each night to reset sleep rhythms
- Visit the school if possible โ walk the route, find the classroom
- Read books about starting school โ stories normalise the experience
- Talk about what to expect without over-reassuring
- Sort school supplies together โ involve children in the process
The First Week Back
Expect some regression โ even children who were completely settled may show clinginess, tears, or changes in sleep and appetite. This is normal. Keep drop-offs brief and confident: "I'll see you at 3pm. Have a great day." A long, drawn-out goodbye amplifies anxiety for both of you.
Supporting School Anxiety
If your child is significantly anxious about returning to school, create a goodbye ritual โ a special handshake, a note in their lunchbox, a small object from home they can keep in their pocket. Transition objects and rituals are scientifically proven to reduce separation anxiety.
For Parents: Back to School Emotions
It's okay to feel emotional when your child starts or returns to school. Milestones can bring up complex feelings โ pride, grief, relief, worry. Give yourself permission to feel all of it. Your emotional health matters as much as your child's.
Write a simple note for your child's lunchbox on the first day back: "I'm so proud of you. I love you. See you at 3pm." It takes 30 seconds and can transform a difficult day. Many children keep these notes for years.
