July is peak summer โ and the perfect month to get outside, get active, and create the kind of family memories that last a lifetime. Research consistently shows that outdoor physical play benefits every aspect of child development, from brain growth to emotional regulation to sleep quality.
"Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. But more importantly, active outdoor play builds the brain, the body, and the bond between parent and child." Guidelines at AAP โ Fitness & Physical Activity.
Why Outdoor Play Matters More Than Ever
Screen time among children has increased dramatically in recent years. The WHO recommends children under 5 have no more than 1 hour of screen time daily, yet surveys show many children far exceed this. Outdoor play is the antidote โ it develops gross motor skills, spatial awareness, risk assessment, creativity, and social skills that no app can replicate.

Sun Safety for Active Families
July means heat and sun. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours. Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight entirely. Stay hydrated โ children often forget to drink when they're playing.
A growing movement encourages families to aim for 1,000 hours outdoors per year โ roughly 3 hours a day. You don't need to hit the number; just use it as inspiration to get outside more than you did yesterday. Every hour counts.
